PAGBUTWA ART EXHIBIT
The exhibition, titled Pagbutwa, is inspired by the Bikolano word for the resurfacing of something long concealed. The idea relates to the emergence of the artistic product from the pandemic-induced disruption in the artistic process, as the show falls under a bigger community project that looks into the relationship of the ecology between production and space.
The exhibit is part of the three phases lined up for Pagbutwa as a community art project. The first one is the recent launch of the online exhibit that, according to curator Geri Matthew Carretero, is meant to “highlight fragmented, disrupted process and engagement and at the same time capture the stillness, movement and continuity of production.”
“We will use #Pagbutwa and upload whatever artworks they like without the curator intervening in the kind of works they choose to post on Facebook and Instagram,” Carratero said. “Whatever is uploaded or produced during the posting of their works in these platforms will be included in the next phase.”
Phase two is the migration of the works from the digital domain to a physical community space, particularly in barangays located in coastal areas where most community members live. Part of this next step are storytelling, visual mapping workshops, talks and interactions about the effects of the pandemic with the members of the community.
Kurit-Lagting began as a mural painting group of five members in 2002. Combining the Bikolano words kurit, which means to draw or make a mark, and lagting, or the hard nut of the pili, the provincial icon of Sorsogon province, the group was formalized as an art collective in 2011.
Today, the group has grown to take on art advocacies on human rights and the environment with around 30 artist-members who are mostly self-taught.
GUIHAPON EXHIBIT
The Kurit- Lagting, a non-stock, non- profit, socio-civic art organization with the thrust of promoting the culture and arts among the youth of Sorsogon through alternative art education and practice held an Art Exhibit as our 4th Kurit Series on the visual arts, theater and literary arts, and photography last 1-31 2012 at the Sorsogon Museum and Heritage Center with the theme “Guihapon: An pagSid-ip” (Again: Looking Through).
OUR THEME:
“Guihapon: An pagSid-ip” (Again: Looking Through)
Festivals.Signposts in time wherein the emotional and institutional triumphs of particulars are celebrated during yearly intervals, on months and days that correspond with dates of important events. Within these parameters, certain themes for the celebratory event are conceptualized to correspond with the shared spirit of the times. (from Artist-Curator, Dave Salazar UP Asterisk Art Exhibit, FC Gallery UP Diliman, 2007)
In Sorsogon during fiesta, the city streets and the main plaza both become a venue for dance competitions and school parades as well as musical performances and other ways of entertainments organized by the city officials and other parties concerned. Like what Salazar said, these events usually mark the start of the festivities which offer aspects for confirming communal solidarity as well as political and economic disputes. Thus, we are continually challenged to appreciate critique and be at awe at the many festivities prepared to us by the many sectors of Sorsogon especially the activities surrounding the Kasanggayahan Festival. Upon entry on the main roads of Sorsogon City, we are met by a multitude of celebratory implements. Inside the city, we find the many activities of organizations and institutions rushing to bank on the atmosphere of this annual celebration.
This year, Kurit-Lagting along with other art groups decided to celebrate its activities in connection with the festival’s aesthetic exuberance through its activities filled with colorful decorations and artistic strategies or images that fascinate spectators to willingly submit in the glorious celebration whenever they witness spectacles of entertainment. In the exhibit, artists voice out the phases of Sorsogon’s history involving socio-politics, culture and the arts. Some artists explore a much deeper concern. One that deals with the issues surrounding the realm of Philippine education- its methods, strengths, flaws, purpose, institutionalization, models and organization.
Traditionally, education is always defined as searching for knowledge – a human activity filled with experience to accumulate values, customs and skills handed over through generations. It is also a formal process in which the development of learning is relayed to an individual or a group in a society.
“Guihapon: An pagSid-ip” (Again: Looking Through) therefore looks into education as a vehicle for liberation against economic and political disorder (by knowing the roots of the problem and its solution),this ART Exhibit also seeks to address if not, to remedy and improve the awareness regarding the quality of education, analyze educational methods using technology such as e-learning, e-correspondence, seek for the issues(tuition fee hikes, salary/wages, standards etc.), voice concerns and know the trends in the country’s educational system, governing bodies and the institutionalization of curriculum.
KURIT-LAGTING's Art Exhibit theme-“Guihapon: An pagSid-ip” (Again: Looking Through), are Sorsoganon terms that imply a concept of someone/ a group of people taking a peek, browsing through, or examining an object again and again. The theme would also like to embody the promotion of the culture and arts through art education by means of familiarization and reconnection where the audience becomes a participant in the duration of the exhibit. At the end of the exhibit, everyone becomes a participant through interaction with the works of art in the space in order for them to appreciate, produce and critique art within different cultures.
The theme simply implies a group of people looking back at the institutions/bodies of learning or the very culture where they had their education for the purpose of reflection. Like any human activity, looking into something is a complicated action because it deals with understanding and coordination between a process and an output.
Overall, the theme seeks to highlight human experiences with education where they will show in their works the current state of education and investigate its role in crafting national identity, in addressing the issues in language and the isolation of the less-privileged or those who lack access to quality education and the multi-layered defragmented society.
